CUPPING THERAPY

RESTORING MOBILITY. RELIEVING TENSION.

Cupping therapy is an advanced treatment technique used to reduce muscle tension, improve soft tissue mobility, and support the body's natural healing process. By creating gentle negative pressure on the skin and underlying tissues, cupping can help improve tissue mobility, decrease sensitivity, and relieve restrictions that may be contributing to pain or limited movement. When combined with a comprehensive physical therapy program, cupping can help restore mobility, reduce discomfort, and improve overall function.

At Lynch TMJ Health, cupping is never used as a stand-alone treatment. Instead, it is thoughtfully incorporated into your individualized plan of care alongside manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, dry needling, breathing retraining, postural retraining, and patient education to address both your symptoms and the underlying factors contributing to your condition.

When Cupping May Help

Cupping may be beneficial for individuals experiencing muscle tightness, myofascial restrictions, limited mobility, or persistent musculoskeletal pain. It is commonly incorporated into treatment for TMJ disorders, headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, upper back pain, sports injuries, and a variety of orthopedic conditions where soft tissue dysfunction contributes to symptoms.

Because every patient is unique, your provider will determine whether cupping is appropriate based on your evaluation, symptoms, and treatment goals.

Part of a Comprehensive Treatment Plan

While cupping can help relieve muscle tension and improve tissue mobility, long-term results come from addressing the movement patterns, posture, breathing mechanics, strength, and daily habits that contribute to pain and dysfunction. For this reason, cupping is always integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan designed to restore healthy movement, improve function, and help prevent symptoms from returning.

Our goal isn't simply to provide temporary relief—it's to help you move more comfortably, recover more efficiently, and return to the activities you enjoy with greater confidence.

Does cupping therapy hurt?

Most people find cupping to be comfortable and relaxing. You may feel a gentle pulling or stretching sensation as the cups create suction, but the treatment should not be painful. The amount of suction is adjusted based on your comfort level, and your provider will monitor your response throughout the session.

How long does it take to work?

Many patients notice reduced muscle tension or improved mobility immediately after treatment, while others experience gradual improvement over several visits. Because cupping is part of a comprehensive treatment plan, lasting results are achieved by combining it with manual therapy, exercise, and other individualized treatments.

Will cupping leave marks?

Cupping may leave temporary circular marks or discoloration on the skin. These are not bruises and are generally painless. They occur because of increased blood flow to the treated area and typically fade within a few days to two weeks, depending on the individual.

What conditions can cupping help treat?

Cupping may be beneficial for muscle tension, myofascial restrictions, neck pain, shoulder pain, upper back pain, headaches, TMJ disorders, and other musculoskeletal conditions. Your provider will determine whether cupping is appropriate based on your evaluation and treatment goals.

Is cupping safe?

When performed by a trained healthcare professional, cupping is considered a safe treatment for many musculoskeletal conditions. Before treatment, we'll review your medical history to determine whether cupping is appropriate and discuss any precautions or contraindications.
