Temporomandibular disorders (TMJ/TMD) encompass a wide range of symptoms, including jaw pain, clicking or popping, limited mouth opening (trismus or "lock jaw"), pain with chewing and facial muscle tightness. Our providers perform a comprehensive evaluation of the jaw, facial muscles, neck, posture, and breathing patterns to identify the underlying factors contributing to your symptoms. The jaw functions as part of an interconnected system, so successful treatment often requires addressing more than the jaw itself.
Treatment is individualized and includes hands-on manual therapy to improve jaw mobility, restore normal movement of the TMJ, and reduce muscle tension in the jaw, face, and neck. For patients experiencing jaw clicking or popping due to disc displacement, we provide education and movement strategies designed to improve jaw mechanics and reduce stress on the joint. For those with trismus (limited mouth opening or & "lock jaw"), treatment focuses on safely restoring mobility while decreasing pain and muscle guarding. We also teach techniques to make eating, speaking, and other daily activities more comfortable and efficient.
Because stress and muscle tension frequently contribute to TMJ disorders, our approach also emphasizes calming an overactive nervous system and reducing excessive activity in the muscles of the face and jaw. Treatments include relaxation training, breathing exercises, posture correction, gentle stretching, and education on habits such as clenching and teeth grinding. By combining evidence-based manual therapy with therapeutic exercise and stress-reduction strategies, our goal is to relieve pain, restore normal jaw function, and help you return to eating, speaking, and living comfortably.
