KINESOLOGY TAPE
A FLEXIBLE APPROACH TO BETTER MOVEMENT
Kinesiology taping is a therapeutic technique used to support muscles and joints while allowing you to move naturally. Unlike rigid athletic tape that restricts motion, kinesiology tape is flexible and designed to work with your body's movement. Depending on your specific condition, it can help improve muscle function, reduce strain on irritated tissues, provide gentle support, and increase awareness of posture and movement throughout the day.
At Lynch TMJ Health, kinesiology taping is never used as a stand-alone treatment. Instead, it is incorporated into your individualized plan of care alongside manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, dry needling, cupping, breathing retraining, and patient education. The tape serves as an extension of your treatment between visits, helping reinforce healthy movement patterns and support the progress made during therapy.
How Kinesiology Taping Can Help
Kinesiology taping may be beneficial for a variety of conditions, including TMJ disorders, neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, postural dysfunction, sports injuries, and other orthopedic conditions. It may be used to reduce stress on overworked muscles, provide gentle support to healing tissues, improve movement awareness, or assist with swelling and inflammation. Your provider will determine whether taping is appropriate based on your evaluation, symptoms, and treatment goals.
When combined with a comprehensive rehabilitation program, kinesiology taping can help improve comfort, encourage better movement, and support your recovery as you return to everyday activities.
How does kinesiology tape work?
Kinesiology tape provides gentle support to muscles and joints without restricting normal movement. It can help improve movement awareness, reduce stress on irritated tissues, and reinforce the movement patterns you're working on during physical therapy.
How long can I wear the tape?
Most kinesiology tape can be worn for 3 to 5 days, including while showering. Your provider will give you specific instructions on how to care for the tape and when it should be removed.
Can I exercise while wearing kinesiology tape?
Yes. Kinesiology tape is designed to move with your body and is commonly worn during work, exercise, sports, and daily activities. In fact, it often helps support movement while you remain active.
Will the tape cure my pain?
Kinesiology taping is intended to complement your overall treatment plan—it is not a cure on its own. Lasting improvement comes from addressing the underlying cause of your symptoms through a combination of hands-on treatment, exercise, movement retraining, and education.
Is kinesiology tape safe for everyone?
Kinesiology tape is safe for most people, but it may not be appropriate for individuals with certain skin conditions, adhesive allergies, or other medical considerations. Before applying the tape, your provider will determine whether it is appropriate for you and provide instructions for safe use.
