HEADACHES & MIGRAINES

banner_head.jpg

Headaches are often influenced by dysfunction in the muscles and joints of the neck, jaw, and
upper back. Whether you experience tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches, or headaches associated with TMJ disorders, our providers perform a comprehensive evaluation to identify the underlying contributors to your symptoms. Common findings include muscle tightness in the jaw, neck, and shoulders, restricted movement of the upper cervical spine, poor posture, breathing dysfunction, and increased sensitivity of the nervous system.

Understanding the source of your headaches allows us to develop a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs rather than simply treating the symptoms.

Treatment focuses on reducing the mechanical stress that can trigger or perpetuate headaches. Hands-on manual therapy is used to improve mobility of the upper cervical spine, jaw, and surrounding soft tissues while decreasing muscle tension throughout the head, neck, and shoulders. Individualized therapeutic exercises help restore strength, flexibility, posture, and movement patterns that support long-term symptom relief. For patients whose headaches are associated with TMJ dysfunction, we also address jaw mechanics, facial muscle tension, clenching, and chewing habits to reduce strain on the temporomandibular joint and surrounding muscles.

Many chronic headaches are also influenced by stress, prolonged muscle guarding, inefficient breathing patterns, and an overactive nervous system. Our treatment approach incorporates diaphragmatic breathing, relaxation strategies, postural retraining, neuromuscular re-education, and education on lifestyle and ergonomic factors that may contribute to recurring headaches. We also provide patients with practical self-management techniques to help reduce headache frequency and intensity between visits. By combining evidence-based manual therapy,
therapeutic exercise, and individualized education, our goal is to decrease headache frequency, reduce pain, improve function, and help you return to work, recreation, and daily activities with greater comfort and confidence.
