EAR RELATED SYMPTOMS

FINDING THE SOURCE BEYOND THE EAR
Ear-related symptoms such as ear discomfort, ear fullness, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), pressure
around the ear, or pain in and around the ear can originate from dysfunction of the jaw, neck, and
surrounding muscles rather than the ear itself. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located directly in front of the ear and shares muscles and nerves with the face and neck, making it common for TMJ disorders and cervical dysfunction to refer symptoms to the ear. Our providers perform a comprehensive evaluation of the jaw, neck, posture, facial muscles, and movement patterns to determine whether a musculoskeletal condition may be contributing to your symptoms.
Because ear-related symptoms can have many causes, we also recognize the importance of collaboration with an ENT or other healthcare provider.
Treatment is designed to reduce stress on the jaw and neck while improving mobility, muscle function, and movement patterns that may be contributing to ear-related symptoms. Hands-on manual therapy helps decrease tension in the muscles surrounding the jaw, face, neck, and upper shoulders while improving mobility of the temporomandibular joint and upper cervical spine. Individualized exercises, posture correction, and neuromuscular re-education are used to improve the coordination of the jaw and neck during daily activities such as eating, talking, and working.
We also provide education on clenching, teeth grinding, and other habits that may increase stress on the TMJ and surrounding tissues.
Stress, muscle guarding, and inefficient breathing patterns can further increase tension throughout the jaw, face, and neck, often making ear-related symptoms more noticeable. Our treatment approach includes relaxation techniques, diaphragmatic breathing, posture retraining, and strategies to calm overactive facial and cervical muscles while reducing unnecessary strain on the nervous system. By addressing the musculoskeletal factors that may contribute to ear discomfort, ear fullness, and tinnitus associated with TMJ or cervical dysfunction, our goal is to reduce symptoms, improve function, and help you return to daily activities with greater comfort and confidence.
