POSTURAL RETRAINING
THE FOUNDATION FOR BETTER MOVEMENT
Posture is more than simply standing up straight. It reflects how your body moves, supports itself, and responds to the demands of daily life. Poor postural habits can place unnecessary stress on the muscles and joints of the jaw, neck, shoulders, and spine, contributing to pain, muscle tension, headaches, and temporomandibular (TMJ) disorders. At Lynch TMJ Health, we evaluate posture as part of a comprehensive assessment to identify movement patterns that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Our goal is not to force you into a perfectly upright position or prescribe rigid posture rules. Instead, we help you develop efficient, balanced movement strategies that reduce strain on your body and improve the way you move throughout the day. By addressing posture as part of your overall treatment plan, we can help decrease pain, improve function, and support long-term recovery.
The Connection Between Posture and Pain
The jaw, head, neck, shoulders, rib cage, and spine function as one interconnected system. When one area is not moving or functioning efficiently, other areas often compensate. For example, prolonged forward head posture, rounded shoulders, or extended periods of sitting can increase stress on the cervical spine and jaw muscles, contributing to headaches, facial pain, jaw discomfort, and neck stiffness.
Improving posture isn't about remaining in one "perfect" position. Healthy posture involves the ability to move freely, change positions regularly, and maintain efficient alignment during work, exercise, and everyday activities.
Your Personalized Movement Assessment
Postural retraining begins with understanding how your body moves. Your provider will evaluate your standing and sitting posture, movement patterns, breathing mechanics, flexibility, strength, and muscle coordination to identify the factors contributing to your symptoms. Treatment is then tailored specifically to your needs and may include hands-on manual therapy, mobility exercises, strengthening, ergonomic education, movement retraining, and personalized home exercises.
Rather than focusing only on the area where you feel pain, we address the underlying movement impairments that may be placing excess stress on your jaw, neck, and spine.
Building Better Habits for Long-Term Relief
One of the most important goals of postural retraining is helping you build healthy movement habits that carry over into your everyday life. Whether you're working at a computer, caring for your family, driving, exercising, or sleeping, small improvements in body mechanics can have a significant impact on reducing pain and preventing symptoms from returning.
By combining postural retraining with manual therapy, breathing techniques, therapeutic exercise, and patient education, we help you move with greater ease, improve your body's efficiency, and support lasting recovery—not just temporary relief.
