TONGUE POSTURE & FUNCTION

THE POWER OF PROPER POSITIONING

The tongue is one of the body's most important muscles, playing a vital role in breathing, swallowing, speech, chewing, and supporting the jaw. When the tongue isn't functioning efficiently or resting in its ideal position, it can contribute to excessive muscle tension, altered swallowing patterns, jaw discomfort, neck pain, headaches, and even changes in breathing mechanics. At Lynch TMJ Health, we evaluate tongue posture and function as part of a comprehensive assessment when it may be contributing to your symptoms.

Rather than viewing the jaw in isolation, we recognize that the tongue, jaw, airway, neck, and facial muscles work together as one interconnected system. Addressing tongue function can improve muscle coordination, reduce unnecessary strain, and enhance the effectiveness of your overall treatment plan.

Why Tongue Posture Matters

At rest, the tongue should gently rest against the roof of the mouth with the lips comfortably closed and breathing occurring primarily through the nose. When the tongue rests low in the mouth or the muscles become overactive or poorly coordinated, the body may compensate in ways that increase stress on the jaw, facial muscles, and cervical spine.

These compensations can contribute to jaw clenching, muscle fatigue, altered swallowing patterns, inefficient breathing, and increased tension throughout the head and neck. Restoring healthy tongue posture and function helps create a more balanced and efficient system for everyday activities such as speaking, eating, breathing, and swallowing.

A Whole-System Evaluation

Every patient is different, which is why tongue function is never assessed in isolation. When appropriate, your provider will evaluate tongue mobility, strength, coordination, resting posture, breathing patterns, swallowing mechanics, jaw movement, cervical posture, and muscle function to determine whether oral motor impairments may be influencing your condition.

This comprehensive approach allows us to identify contributing factors that may otherwise be overlooked and ensures your treatment plan addresses the underlying causes of your symptoms—not just where you feel pain.

Retraining Healthy Function

When indicated, treatment may include gentle exercises to improve tongue awareness, mobility, coordination, resting posture, and swallowing mechanics, along with breathing retraining, postural retraining, manual therapy, and individualized home exercises. Every recommendation is tailored to your specific findings and integrated into your overall plan of care.

By improving the way the tongue functions within the larger movement system, we aim to reduce unnecessary muscle tension, improve jaw mechanics, support efficient breathing, and promote lasting improvements in comfort and function.
